Week 4 of the Creative Space Blog Hop - Fabric Stash Oh My!

I started storing my fabric stash by color in labeled bins stored on a set of closet shelves my son built for me. When I moved to the new studio I lost the closet shelves so I bought metal storage shelves and run these down the middle of the room. I can store bins on both side of the racks.
I also have additional bins with fabric by theme, reproductions, and batiks. There are also project bins for storing all the "stuff" needed for a project. . . when I have the time. hahaha
Finally, I have bins for each Grandchild. I put goodies in there I think they might like. When the come to visit they can get out their box and play with the items in there. They go back in the box when they are done. I am always adding more things to the box so they never know what will be in there when they come over to play. It is a great distraction for them when I am in the studio working and they want to be down there with me.

ReplyDeleteDreeser drawers work great, keep things organized and dust free. Just keep the size of drawer manageable when full, so you can pull for a quilt project. You can use the top as a cutting, ironing suface (once you prepare it).

ReplyDeleteI think your reality is more common than one might think. I have most my fabric in pretty antique glass fronted library cases but I suspect I may not have as much as you do. Nothing wrong with storage bins. They are practical and keep the dust out!

Reeze, You are not alone! I gave up smoking many years ago and used that money for my stash. Need I say more???

ReplyDeleteI put my fabric in my bins so they look like your fantasy. That way when I open them I can see all, what is in there. I turn them on the short side and then stack the fabric til the bin or box is full. One color per box or bin and then mark the outside.
ReplyDeleteAny GREAT IDEAS to ORGANIZE?? I'm afraid my sewing ROOMS (YES, it has spread to other areas...) are worse than yours!!!! Busting at the seams! Any THOUGHTS would be greatly appreciated!
ReplyDeleteSinging to the choir .. my sewing space looking like I’m on the third day of battling a poltergeist. It was clean at one one all in bins - then I got creative and need that one fabric - now I use the closet and a pant hanger for large pieces of fabric and ikea see through bins for fat quarters
ReplyDeleteI think you get a free pass since you actually have an income flow from your stash...I have no such excuse!
ReplyDeleteI see that some of your bins you wrote on directly to label. If you need to re-purpose a bin that you wrote on, isopropyl alcohol works great to take off sharpie permanent marks from a plastic bin. I like individual alcohol wipes but from the bottle works too.
